Lesson: Lingua Franca
On a global scale, English has become the de facto lingua franca for economic purposes. That leads to questions such as how English became the international lingua franca, whether it should be or will always be the lingua franca, and whether it is time to change English because there are so many different versions. If you are reading this, you can communicate in English. However, it is also possible that you are not a native English speaker but a speaker of Japanese, German, French, or some other language. If you are German or French, you probably speak British English, whereas a Japanese most likely speaks American English. So, if a German has a conversation with a Japanese in English, there may still be communication issues. English as a lingua franca! Isn’t it wonderful?
