Lesson: PANIC buying

The world is gradually heading closer to a pandemic. In the early stages, governments have been able to track down the vector of a local outbreak, isolate them and limit the spread of COVID-19 to relatively small clusters. Communal spread, however, is inevitable. Like regular influenza, it may soon be impossible to track and care for every single case of COVID-19. Perhaps due to this realization, people are panic buying. Of all the things people could buy, toilet paper seems to be at the top of everyone’s list. Why? The CDC and American, Australian, Canadian, and UK governments are advising people to stockpile supplies gradually in case they have to self-quarantine. This has resulted in a run on stores and the evaporation of goods. What is behind panic buying? Is it rational or irrational behaviour?
