Lesson: Microplastics
Microplastics, tiny plastic particles measuring less than five millimetres, have become a pervasive pollutant in our environment. They originate from various sources, including the breakdown of larger plastics, synthetic fibres from clothing, and microbeads in personal care products such as toothpaste. These particles infiltrate ecosystems, affecting marine life, wildlife, and, ultimately, human health. Aquatic organisms often ingest microplastics, which can lead to physical harm and chemical exposure, as these particles can contain toxic additives and pollutants.
Recent studies have demonstrated that microplastics can also be found in the human body, with traces detected in blood, lungs, and even the brain. The potential health implications are concerning; while research is still ongoing, there are worries about inflammation, cellular damage, and the disruption of endocrine functions. As awareness of microplastics grows, efforts to reduce plastic consumption, improve waste management, and promote sustainable practices are essential for protecting both our environment and our health.
