Lesson: Mandatory Service

Mandatory service in the military (conscription), or national service, has been a contentious issue in modern times. It is, however, making a comeback. Militaries in countries such as The United States and Japan face challenges recruiting volunteers for military service. Many countries, such as South Korea and Scandinavian countries, use conscription to ensure a steady supply of military personnel. Proponents of conscription argue that it instills a sense of national duty and fosters a more inclusive military, attracting individuals from all walks of life. They also say that it provides valuable training and discipline to young people. However, opponents argue that mandatory service in the military can potentially infringe on individual freedoms, a concern that should not be taken lightly. In modern times, some countries have adopted alternative forms of national service, such as community or civil service, to balance the needs of the state with the rights of individuals. Ultimately, the debate around mandatory service in the military today reflects the complex intersection of national defence, individual liberty, and social responsibility.
