Lesson: Male Malaise

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in what is often referred to as male malaise. This term refers to the emotional and psychological struggles many men, especially young men, face. Factors contributing to this phenomenon include societal pressures to conform to traditional notions of masculinity from a time lost to history. The rise of mental health awareness has highlighted these issues, revealing that many men grapple with feelings of inadequacy, depression, and anxiety due to unrealistic expectations. Economic shifts, job instability, and the rise of pink-collar jobs have all added to feelings of disenchantment, as men may feel their roles as providers are threatened. The impact of technology and social media can exacerbate these feelings, leading to isolation and comparison with idealized lifestyles. Also, it appears women may be adapting better to workplace, educational and societal changes, which leave men further feeling stuck between traditional gender roles that no longer exist and a much more challenging modern world where men’s roles in society are fluid.
