Lesson: Dopamine Detox

Our brains have not adapted to the highly stimulating world we live in. It’s easy to get caught up in the constant barrage of demands to consume more and more information. A new trend is for people to turn to so-called dopamine detoxes to reset their brains and break free from the cycle of instant gratification. The dopamine detox trend involves cutting out all sources of pleasure and stimulation for a set period, usually 24-48 hours. This includes social media, video games, junk food, etc. By depriving the brain of these dopamine triggers, the theory is that it will become less reliant on external sources of happiness and learn to find satisfaction in simpler things. Proponents of dopamine detoxes claim they can increase productivity, better sleep, and a greater appreciation for life’s little pleasures. However, critics argue that these detoxes are extreme and unnecessary and that healthier ways to find balance in our lives exist.
