Lesson: Disease X

The concept of Disease X (read as ex) was initially conceived in 2018.  Amazingly, it took 100 years for humans to formalize the notion that one day another highly contagious disease (The 2018 Spanish Flu was the last one) would come along, take us unawares, and kill hundreds of millions of people. In February 2020, the New York Times published an opinion piece claiming COVID-19 was the big one, our so-called Disease X. As bad as COVID was, and still is, it’s not Disease X. Epidemiologists still believe Disease X may be developing in the jungles of Africa or the wet markets of China right now.
