Lesson: Capital Punishment
The death sentence was handed down on the leader of the Aum cult and six of its members and was carried out by the Japanese government. Some may feel that now the surviving victims and family members can have a sense of closure. It is the right of a sovereign nation to determine if capital punishment is an appropriate punishment for heinous crimes within their country. Currently, the only two Western countries that still carry out executions are Japan and the United States. Countries such as Canada and Russia have removed the death penalty from their penal laws. Is the death penalty a good deterrent? Is it ethical? Should members of the G7 and modern Western nations still carry out the death penalty for serious crimes?
