Lesson: Better Play, Equal Pay
Nadeshiko Japan and the American women’s soccer team have both won World Cups. The Japanese and American men have not. They haven’t even come close. Why are female athletes paid less than male athletes when women have been more successful than men in these sports? Is it discrimination, or is there a reasonable explanation? A quick online search will return some exciting headlines. “Women soccer players to go on strike in Spain” (Japan Times), “Australia’s women footballers get equal pay in landmark deal” (CNN), “Norway’s footballers sign historic equal pay agreement” (CNN), and “U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Sues U.S. Soccer for Gender Discrimination” (New York Times). The fight against gender discrimination and unequal pay has a new battlefield – sports. Maybe, just maybe, this is one battle the women are winning. The question is, why do they have to fight this battle in the first place?
