Lesson: Baring your Soles

First, Kate Moss created an uproar, then Julia Roberts caused a stink with her bare feet at the Cannes Film Festival. Recently, Angelina Jolie has bared her soles with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. What’s up with feet? What is so socially unacceptable about going barefoot in public? I must admit that barefoot culture in Australia was a little shocking when I first moved there from Canada. Walking from the beach to the parking lot at Manly Beach on Christmas Day when every foot in Canada was wrapped up in four pairs of socks and heavily insulated boots as protection from -40℃ was liberating. Perhaps that’s the issue. Going barefoot in public is insulting to those unable or unwilling to embrace the freedom of letting your toes hang out in the sunshine. Once the temperature goes above 25℃, shoes become coffins for your feet. Let’s discuss baring your soles in public.

Each conversation topic is based on a theme. In order to help students acquire a basic understanding of that topic, four media articles are provided for them to read. I will never test you on the articles, but I strongly suggest you book lessons far enough in advance to give yourself enough time to properly prepare. The better prepared you are, the more benefit you will receive from our conversations.
