A saying in English goes youth is wasted on the young.
At first, you may think that sounds strange.
I mean, youth and young are interdependent, right?
If you are a youth, you are young; if you are young, you must be a youth.
So, how can a young person waste their youth?
Well, youth is wasted on the young, means young people fail to appreciate the value of their youth.
Each person’s life experience is unique, and we only really become wise through experience.
The thing is that many people, myself included, once they have some wisdom, wish they could also have their youth back.
How often have you heard someone say if only I knew then what I know now, referring to their youth?
Many people ‘waste’ their youth doing stupid things such as drinking too much, wasting money, chasing girls or getting involved with drugs.
If more mature people, like us over thirty-fives, had the wisdom we have now and our youth, oh, the things we could accomplish!
Unfortunately, life is all about the game of give and take.
The longer we live, the more wisdom life gives us, but the more youth it takes away.
So, when someone says youth is wasted on the young, they are really saying that they wish they could be young again.
In hindsight, they regret their mistakes and want to have the endless energy and lack of inhibitions they had in their youth.
I say this: age is only a number, and youth is a state of mind.
Stop feeling sorry for yourself and live every day.
Be young at heart.
The young waste their youth.
