Lesson: Retail Therapy

As a new teacher in Japan, one thing that surprised me was the large number of students who told me their hobbies were shopping and sleeping. I never quite figured out if they were sleeping while shopping – I guess we could call it ‘sleepshopping’ (a form of sleepwalking) – or if shopping made them sleepy. One thing I can say for sure is that Japanese people enjoy shopping. Now, this is no different from anywhere else. Shopping is a favourite pastime for many people. Some call it retail therapy, meaning that shopping can help relieve our stress and make us feel good. So, does retail therapy work for you? I know it does for me. Let’s have a pleasant conversation about shopping and how it makes us feel.

Each conversation topic is based on a theme. In order to help students acquire a basic understanding of that topic, four media articles are provided for them to read. I will never test you on the articles, but I strongly suggest you book lessons far enough in advance to give yourself enough time to properly prepare. The better prepared you are, the more benefit you will receive from our conversations.
