Underdog

Underdog means that a person has less access to money or power than other individuals in society. It doesn't mean a person looks like a dog.

WotD: Underdog

First of all, I need to clarify here.

We need to understand that this word has nothing to do with dogs or people looking or acting like dogs; it is not a negative term in any way.

Underdog means a person has less access to money or power than others.

Right now, an election is happening in Tokyo, and the most prominent or well-known candidates have the support of one or more political parties.

Yuriko Koike, however, needs the support of a political party.

In contrast, Yuriko Koike has less access to money, support, and power in this election, making her the underdog this time.
