Ulterior motive

Quite simply an ulterior motive is a secret reason for doing something. An ulterior motive for something may be in their self interest.
You can’t help but be suspicious when someone suddenly gives you flowers.

WotD: Ulterior motive

An ulterior motive is a secret or not-so-obvious reason for doing something.

Some people may try to curry favour with their boss, not because they like their boss, but because they want the next promotion to marketing manager; they have another reason which is in their best interests.

Being suspicious is not a good thing, but if someone suddenly gives you flowers for no apparent reason, you should wonder if they have a secret about which you should know.

Did they crash the car?

Maybe they lost money gambling?

Or they may want you to make your famous peach cobbler for their party.

You see, not all ulterior motives are bad.
