Word of the Day: Shortchange

Today’s word can have two meanings.

First, you’ve been shortchanged if you purchase something and the clerk gives you less change than they should have.

Perhaps the clerk made a mistake, or maybe they are trying to make some extra money.

Either way, you should ask for the rest of your change.

Then, we have the second meaning.

If you feel that you’re not being treated fairly or that you are getting less than you deserve, then you’re feeling shortchanged.

Imagine that you have two children and one chocolate bar.

You break the chocolate bar into two seemingly equal pieces and give one piece to each of the children.

For sure, they will fight.

One child will feel shortchanged because the other has an extra peanut or the other half is a millimetre longer.

So there you go. You can be shortchanged if a store clerk gives you less change than they should, and you can feel shortchanged if you get less than you think you deserve.
