Off-grid

When people prefer to live without being connected to a traditional supply of electricity, they live off-grid. Often they use solar energy.
Look, mom, no lines!

Word of the Day: Off-grid

On Friday, I introduced the term power grid.

It’s the system of power plants, power lines, etc. that bring electricity to our homes and offices.

Well, some people prefer to live off-grid without being connected to the main power supply.

Traditionally, this meant that they did not live close to power lines.

Often, they lived deep in the countryside somewhere.

However, these days, some people in the city live off-grid by supplying their own wind or solar power.

No matter where they are, people living in homes not connected to a traditional power source live off-grid.
