Layman

A layman a person who does not have detailed knowledge or training in a particular subject or area. Most of us speak in layman's terms.
Don’t be bombastic; just speak to me in layman’s terms.

Word of the Day: Layman

Just as a disclaimer, Layman has a religious meaning, but I am not using that meaning today.

The definition I am introducing today is a person who does not have detailed knowledge or training in a particular subject or area.

Just last week, my students and I were discussing genetic testing.

Although the conversations were fascinating, we were all laymen, meaning neither one of us had any specialized training in or specific knowledge of genetic testing.

We could not talk in detail about the process, etc.

We discussed the topic in layman’s terms and expressed our opinions as best we could with our limited knowledge.
