Word of the Day: Keeper

The meaning of this word can completely change depending on the situation.

When playing sports, a keeper or goaltender is the person who is in charge of preventing goals.

For example, each team in soccer and ice hockey has a keeper, and their job is to prevent goals from being scored.

The next meaning is someone or something you should keep because they are outstanding and worth having.

For example, when people are dating, they often look for a husband or wife and a keeper.

In terms of dating and relationships, a keeper is Mr. or Mrs. Right, i.e. the person you marry or at least you want to marry.

I’m guessing that anyone reading this is familiar with (notice the preposition) Marie Kondo.

Marie Kondo is all about decluttering by getting rid of the stuff in your home that doesn’t bring joy.

All the things that you don’t throw away are keepers. These things are essential to you, bring joy to your life and therefore have value.
