Word of the Day: Curry favour
If you try to curry favour, you praise your boss or someone else in authority in an insincere manner.
In slang terms, we’d say it’s a nice way to say kiss ass.
You are insincere because you have an ulterior motive.
That ulterior motive could be a desire to receive a promotion at work, to obtain a government contract, or to be included in a well-respected group of people.
No matter what the reason, most of society will look down upon people who try to kiss ass at work or in political circles.
However, many individuals who insincerely praise their boss or another influential person may feel it’s one of the unpleasant things that they have to do to get ahead in life.
Before you walk into your boss’s office to compliment her work, think for a moment: are you currying favour or being sincere?
What will your boss think?
