Word of the Day: Abbreviation vs Acronym

We are going to do a little bit of grammar today.

I’ll keep it short, I promise.

Both abbreviations and acronyms are similar in that they are used to shorten something.

PC for personal computer or VOD for video on demand are examples of abbreviations.

On the other hand, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) are examples of acronyms because they can be read as words.

There is a significant difference between them in the way they are read.

Each letter is spelled out for an abbreviation, but an acronym is an abbreviation we can read as a word.
