WotD: Wanderlust
The world is a fantastic place.
After backpacking around half of it during my 20s, I know what I’m talking about.
Initially, I left home for Vancouver, BC, to find work so I would be able to continue paying for university.
That was a fantastic time.
That’s when I caught the wanderlust from all the Aussies, Kiwis and Europeans I met at the Jericho Beach YHA Hostel.
It was so great that I stayed in that hostel for an entire summer.
That is where and when I realized I could and should go anywhere I wanted, and the wanderlust took hold of me.
For those who don’t know, wanderlust is an irresistible urge to travel.
First, I knew I had to travel across Canada, not just fly over it.
Meeting many other backpackers who knew more about my country than I did was humbling and, frankly, very embarrassing.
After that, I spent almost two years in Australia, then moved on to various Pacific Islands, one full year in New Zealand, Hawaii, across the northern United States, followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia.

As I said, the wanderlust got a hold of me.
Now, at 47 years old, I believe that old feeling to break camp and move on is coming on me again.
Perhaps I’m going stir crazy from all this staying at home during the pandemic, or it could be my age, but I want to move again.
No, not away from Japan. I want to travel throughout the countryside of Japan and compare it all to Wakayama.
That’s what wanderlust is; a burning desire to travel.
It had subsided for a while, but the fire is burning in me again.
