Idiom: Thorn in your side

Imagine how uncomfortable it would feel if you had a thorn stuck in your finger.

If a sharp thorn sticks in your side or any other part of your body, it will hurt like hell.

It would be a problem that never goes away and causes constant difficulty for you.

Now imagine you have regular ‘technical issues’ with your computer, car, smartphone, etc.

The feeling would be almost the same.

The technical issues would be a thorn in your side which means that something is always causing problems and difficulty for you.

It doesn’t always have to be computers or other things that bother you, though.

We’ve all had coworkers who talked too much when we were trying to concentrate on our work.

Even at home, a spouse or sibling can be quite a large thorn in our side if they insist on watching TV with the volume turned up loud when we are trying to read or perhaps even study.
