Idiom: Think out loud
You’ve heard someone speak out loud, shout out loud and probably even sing out loud, but have you ever heard anyone think out loud?
When someone thinks out loud, they say whatever comes to mind.
They don’t think about it first to consider if it makes sense or not – they say it.
Sometimes, what the person says is rather stupid, and sometimes, it is idiotic.
Often, it’s embarrassing.
Consider thinking out loud as brainstorming without the brain 98% of the time.
Now and then, however, it sparks a eureka moment.
When people are trying to figure out a problem or are just considering how to solve a problem, they have to write it down or say it.
It may help the thinking process.
I’m not sure.
When I write these posts, I think out loud all the time, which is different than talking to yourself.
Sometimes, to make your plan or resolution seem real, you must write it down.
Writing it down makes it seem real.
Now, take that idea and apply it to thinking.
Sometimes, you have to think out loud to make your thoughts and ideas seem real.
If you keep an idea to yourself, it may seem like the best idea you’ve ever had, and you wonder why no one else has ever thought about it.
Then, before you go and tell everyone about your fantastic, excellent, marvellous idea, you unconsciously verbalize your thoughts.
Whoever is within earshot of you looks at you with a quizzical expression on their face as if you are crazy.
At that moment, you realize that your fantastic, wonderful, marvellous idea is the dumbest idea you’ve ever had.
You quickly look at the person with a sheepish look on your face and say, ‘Don’t mind me; I’m just thinking out loud.’
Whew! That was close.
