Idiom: The cards are stacked against you

Yes, that’s right, just like poor old Sisyphus, sometimes the cards are stacked against you.

When the cards are stacked against you, you face many difficulties.

You are also not likely to be successful because you haven’t been given a fair chance.

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was condemned to an eternity of pushing a boulder up a hill and then watching it roll down again.

He could not win; the cards were stacked against him.

When the cards are stacked against you, you face many difficulties.

Success is unlikely because you’re not being given a fair chance.

Now, of course, in life, we can win.

The Gods are not working against most of us, and the Gods have not condemned most of us – it just feels like it sometimes.

When we want to finish university, for example, or purchase a house, it may feel like the cards are stacked against us, but by working hard (a little easy money wouldn’t hurt either) and being patient, most people can realize their dreams.

Sometimes, it may feel like the cards are stacked against us, but in reality, we are just facing the usual difficulties.
