English Phrase: That ship has sailed

The phrase that ship has sailed indicates that an opportunity has been missed or it’s too late to change a situation.

This phrase can be utilized when expressing regrets about the past.

For example, John has broken up with his girlfriend but wants to get back together.

Unfortunately, she has a new boyfriend, so that ship has sailed.

It’s too late for a do-over, and John will not be getting back with her.

As another example, many people would love to go back and study harder in university than they did the first time, but once again, that ship has sailed.

It’s too late to go back and do it differently.
