WotD: Tempt fate
When you tempt fate and get away with it, you become everyone’s hero.
They all talk about how cool and brave you are with nerves of steel.
When you tempt fate and lose, you become a big fat zero.
People will turn on you in a second and will not hesitate to tell you and anybody who will listen how stupid and idiotic you are.
The dictionaries will tell you tempting fate involves taking a silly risk and depending on luck.
People will say to you that tempting fate means just being stupid.
Fate is a power that controls what happens to you in life.
OK, that seems simple enough – we don’t have control over what happens in life, so whatever happens, happens.
Ah, ha, it’s not that simple, though.
We, humans, have something called free will.
This means we can choose what we do.
We may not be able to determine the outcome, but we can choose the actions we take.
If a young man base jumps, experiences a parachute failure and dies, that’s not fate – that’s stupidity.
He was stupid enough to jump off a building and tempt fate.
Fate sees this and says, ‘Well, if you’re stupid enough to jump off a building, then you’re putting your life in my hands, and I think you should die.’
If it’s his lucky day and he doesn’t die, he experiences a rush of adrenaline, and all his friends think he’s one cool dude.
They put it on YouTube, and he is arrested.
If he dies, some poor first responder has to phone his parents and tell them their son is dead and explain how he died.
When you tempt fate, you make a decision to put your future into fate’s hands.
She determines if you are a hero or a zero – it has nothing to do with skill or daring – it’s 100% stupidity and luck.
