English Idiom: Strike a chord

Something can strike a chord with you when you like it because it connects to your life or experiences, and you can relate to it.

For example, let’s imagine that your children are going to university for the first time.

Of course, they are experiencing a broad range of emotions because they are excited to be going.

At the same time, however, they realize that attending university is a significant step in their life.

Their confused emotions strike a chord with you because you were in their shoes once and can relate to how they feel.

It may even bring about a brief feeling of nostalgia for you.

I say ‘brief’ because no matter how fondly we remember our university days, we probably don’t want to become a student again.

I like to say everything in moderation.

Nine years of studying and working hard to pay for a university education is enough for me.

This post is understandable by someone with at least an 8th-grade education (age 13 – 14).

On the Flesch-Kincaid reading-ease test, this post scores 62.

The easier a passage is to read, the higher the score on a scale of 0 – 100.
