English Idiom: Strike a chord

Something can strike a chord with you when you like it because it connects to your life or experiences and you can relate to it.

For example, let’s imagine that your children are going to university for the first time. Of course, they are experiencing a broad range of emotions because they are excited to be going. At the same time, however, they realize that going to university is a major step in their life.

Their confused emotions strike a chord with you because you were in their shoes once and can relate to how they feel.

It may even bring about a brief feeling of nostalgia for you. I say ‘brief’ because no matter how fondly we remember our university days, we probably don’t want to become a student again.

I say like to say everything in moderation. Nine years of studying at and working hard to pay for university education is enough for me.
