Stave off

When we stave off something, we find a way to prevent something bad from happening. Example: A flu shot is a way to stave off influenza.
Go for a hike, take a walk, get away from your computer and get out there.

WotD: Stave off

People must learn how to stave things off or even other people.

When we stave something off, we find a way to prevent something terrible from happening.

For example, getting the flu vaccine every year is a way of staving off a severe case of influenza.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

That’s how the saying goes.

For many people, getting away from the city and immersing themselves in the peace and quiet of the countryside is a way of staving off stress and breakdown caused by a hectic life.

Even people can be staved off.

From time to time, a female may face unwanted romantic attention from a male.

In such cases, the suitor should be discouraged, gently at first and then more strongly if they don’t get the hint.
