Start from Scratch

Starting from scratch means to begin something without prior preparation. Popping a frozen meal in a microwave isn't starting from scratch.
Start from scratch by mixing some flour and a few eggs, add some vanilla, and what do you have?

Expression: Start from Scratch

Our busy modern lifestyle means people don’t have enough time to start from scratch when preparing meals anymore, or at least that’s what they say.

That’s one reason why prepared meal delivery services are becoming so popular.

It’s the same for me, but I like to prepare something from scratch now and then.

I like to start from zero to cook a pizza (including the sauce) or bake a loaf of bread or a cake.

Starting from scratch means beginning something without any prior preparation.

I’ll even bake a few dozen cookies once in a blue moon.

Cookies are a little dangerous, though, because if I know that there are cookies in the house, well, let’s say I get the munchies every 30 minutes or so.

Popping a frozen meal into the microwave to heat it is not starting from scratch.

Opening up a bag of flour, breaking a few eggs, adding sugar and mixing it up, now that’s starting from scratch.
