Word of the Day: Sketchy

Have you ever been on an overseas trip in a new city and found yourself unexpectedly in a sketchy part of town?

When something or somewhere feels sketchy, the danger isn’t obvious, but your senses tell you something is not right, and there may be danger lurking somewhere.

You’re in a touristy area with craft shops, souvenir stores and chubby American couples dressed alike.

Then you turn a corner, and everything changes.

It’s like you are in a different world.

Things don’t feel right for some reason.

The area doesn’t feel entirely safe, and you realize you are in a sketchy part of town.

It’s like what Tennoji in Osaka felt like 20 years ago.

Men are sitting on the street, empty cardboard boxes on the ground and sleeping bags on the sidewalk.

You don’t see anything dangerous, but you have this uncanny feeling that something there is not quite right and that danger may lurk somewhere.

Your senses tell you this is a sketchy area, and you should go back the way you came.
