English Expression: Since the year dot

Happy January second.

It is funny, but the New Year’s celebrations are winding down.

Soon, people will start getting ready to go back to work.

I guess people have been doing this since the year dot.

Since the year dot means something has been occurring for a very long time. Think of the year dot as the very first year

We’ve been celebrating the New Year with overeating and sleeping in for as long as we can remember.

It’s always been a joyous time.

Yes, since the year dot, people have been enjoying the combined Christmas and New Year’s holiday season and then not enjoying going back to work and getting into the daily grind.

Just as people have been doing since the beginning of time, many of us will soon be getting up and going to work for the first time in 2017.

Enjoy!
