WotD: Range anxiety

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

In the lesson introduction for Going Electric (check it out if you’re interested), I said that 2021 is slated to be the year of the electric vehicle (EV) in the US.

To date, there have been three main hurdles to the mass adoption of transportation electrification: price, lack of charging infrastructure and range anxiety.

In this post, we’ll look at the last one.

Range anxiety is the stress or fear that a person feels when they think their vehicle has insufficient range to make it to their destination.

They fear running out of electricity and not being able to recharge conveniently.

This would probably leave them stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Being in the market for a new car myself, I’ve been investigating EVs.

To me, going electric makes sense.

I want to become as independent of the oil industry as I can.

It seems that range anxiety is fast becoming a moot point.

The charging infrastructure in the UK and USA is quickly being built out.

Besides, research indicates that most people drive their vehicles for a limited distance each day.

Range anxiety is not a problem if you only go 100km to work and back, but your EV has a 200 – 350 km range.

We plug in our phones before we hit the sack.

A slight behaviour adjustment would mean we’d also plug in our cars each night before going to bed.

Sure, not everyone has a place to plug in an EV, can afford the higher initial cost (myself included) or feels the charging infrastructure is sufficient for the distances they drive.

That’s all good and well, but the point I’m making today is range anxiety is the fear your EV can’t go the distance.

Research says it doesn’t have to, and even if it does, 200 – 350 km is enough for the vast majority of people.
