Quick

The quick, yes it is a noun in this case, is the delicate pink skin under your fingernail. If you expose the quick it'll hurt very much.
Your fingernails protect the delicate pink skin underneath.

Word of the Day: Quick

Ladies, I am sure you have broken a fingernail more than once.

Have you ever broken a nail and exposed the quick of your finger?

I’m using quick as a noun, which means the delicate pink skin under your fingernail.

If you expose this part of your body, it hurts like all get out.

I hit my finger with a hammer and jammed my finger more than once so severely that I lost my entire fingernail and completely exposed the quick.

WOW! It hurts, and I mean H-U-R-T-S very much!

The next time you break off a fingernail, cut it too short or lose an entire fingernail, the delicate pink skin that is exposed is called the quick, and it HURTS! A lot!
