Word of the Day: Put (someone) under
Have you ever undergone an operation?
You don’t have to answer because that’s your own story, but if you have had surgery, then you’ve probably been put under.
When a person is put under, they are made unconscious with an anesthetic.
You see, before the patient goes under the knife and the doctor begins her work, the anesthesiologist goes to work with their particular drugs to put the patient under.
When the anesthesiologist is finished, the patient is asleep and unconscious due to the effects of the drugs.
There you have it: before you go under the doctor’s knife, the anesthesiologist puts you under first.
