Idiom: Pour cold water on (something)
There are people in your life who are incredibly supportive of everything you do.
They believe in your ability and determination.
Then there are the others. You know who they are.
They are the ones who pour cold water on every novel or original idea you have.
It’s their mission in life to discourage and deter you from ever taking a chance or experiencing something new.
That type of person is what I like to call a party pooper.
It’s not that they like to poop at parties.
Although I have to admit I have never investigated that possibility.
It’s that they enjoy throwing cold water on any idea that others become excited about.
I have always been a bit of an entrepreneur or a self-starter.
This means that I am indefatigable.
Once the seed is planted for a new idea, no amount of cold water will discourage me until I have exhausted myself trying to attain success.
As a high school student, I saved enough money for my first two years of university by selling hand-made wooden items at a flea market every Sunday.
At first, my father threw cold water on the idea and said it would never work.
It did, of course, it did, I am indefatigable.
When I moved to Japan, my wife’s (then girlfriend’s) mother told me I could never survive here, and she gave it six months before I ran back to Canada with my tail between my legs.
Her attempt to pour cold water on our dreams failed miserably.
Twenty-one years later, I am still here.
The moral of this post is don’t listen to those who pour cold water on your goals.
As long as you believe in yourself, you will be a success. Don’t be afraid of a little cold water – be indefatigable.
