WotD: Pipe dream
Have you ever had a pipe dream?
I mean the kind of hope where you had a private island all to yourself.
A dream in which there was no need to work anymore, so you traded in crowded train rides for a dugout canoe, the cold hard sidewalk for a soft private beach and the noise of traffic for the sound of palm tree fronds rustling in the wind.
This island paradise is an unattainable ideal for most of us.
That’s what a pipe dream is – something which is very unlikely to happen.
Now, you may be wondering where this term comes from.
Well, when opium was the drug of choice for many people, they smoked it in a pipe, and it made them dream lovely dreams that were utterly unattainable in ‘real’ life.
