Word of the Day: Philanthropist

When I think about a philanthropist, the first person to come to mind is Andrew Carnegie, followed by Rockefeller and Bill Gates.

They are people who want to improve the welfare of others in some way by using their vast wealth.

Many of the world’s wealthy people have donated to charity.

You don’t have to be a moneybag to help people, but money does help.

Philanthropists can do many things, such as fund research to cure disease, fund the construction of libraries, or provide agricultural education to farmers in third-world countries to make their farms more productive.

Philanthropists can have an enormous impact on society.

Mr. Carnegie, the man in the above picture, funded 2,509 libraries.

Yep, that’s right. There are 2,509 Carnegie libraries in North America.

I’m sure those libraries have benefitted millions of people over the years.
