WotD: Pet project
It’s becoming more common as the years go by for a person to have a pet project.
This is often something that they are pursuing as an individual interest.
It may be related to their job but is often not necessary or even approved by their boss or company.
I suppose we could say a pet project is a side-hustle in the nascent stages.
In Japan, many companies forbid their employees from having a second job or their own small business in addition to their primary source of income.
I’m not sure why they do that other than to ensure their workers have no reason not to work late into the evenings.
In other countries, it’s common for a person to be pursuing a pet project.
It’s the idea of a man tinkering in his basement or backyard shed to improve the functioning of a toaster, for example.
He often runs the risk of electrocuting himself and burning down his property, but it is a pet project he has.
For others, it may be turning their dream of founding a small company into a reality.
Before I started ArtisanEnglish.jp, I quit my job.
Many people can’t afford to do that.
That’s why they have a pet project.
They work on their business in their spare time.

Yes, you may think that it is a hobby, and it is, but the difference is that a pet project can often become a source of employment.
Whereas a hobby is a way to fight boredom and pass the time, a pet project is based more strongly on an individual’s thoughts, theories, or beliefs about something.
