English Idiom: On automatic pilot (autopilot)

Have you ever had one of those days where you were at work but were not thinking about it?

If you have had a day like that, you were working on automatic pilot.

When on automatic pilot or autopilot, you’re not thinking about what you’re doing. Your mind is on one thing, and your body is doing another.

Maybe you were sick that day.

Perhaps you were having family troubles back at home.

It could have been that your mind was on other things.

Either way, your mind was not on the job, and you were simply on autopilot all day.

This happens to most of us, and it is OK if you are doing some manual labour or working on a task that is not very important.

If you’re doing something that requires concentration, such as an operation or driving a bus or bullet train, perhaps it’s best not to let yourself run on an automatic pilot.

You have people’s lives in your hands.
