English Phrase: Off the shelf

A lot of software today can be used off the shelf.

This means that the software does not need to be specially made to order. When you purchase a computer, it is ready to go immediately. You don’t need to ask for the operating system to be specially created just for you.

You download and use it; the software is ready for immediate use.

When something is ready for use off the shelf, you can use it immediately without any significant adjustments.

These days, companies like to find solutions to their business problems off the shelf.

Things such as payroll accounting software can be purchased, installed, and used, reducing setup time and cost for employers.
