WotD: Manifest

Most Japanese understand the word manifest as meaning a list of something, most often the list of lies, oh sorry promises, that politicians tell us during an election.

That is not the entire meaning of the word, however.

It can also be a verb.

As a verb, manifest has the sense of clearly showing something with a sign or action.

For example, flu season is rapidly approaching.

How will we know if we have developed the flu?

Well, the flu manifests itself in many ways, such as with a fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, aches and pains, headaches and fatigue.

You may have the flu if you have some or all of these things simultaneously.

Influenza manifests itself in many ways, and none of them is pleasant.
