Proverb: If you want a thing done well, do it yourself

If you are a manager working in a large company, you are encouraged and taught how to delegate authority.

However, if you are an entrepreneur, you know if you want a thing done well, do it yourself.

Why is it that way?

First, if you want a thing done well, do it yourself means it’s better to do things yourself and ensure they are done correctly than to trust others to do it properly.

In large corporations, many checks and balances are in place to ensure people complete their assigned tasks and do their jobs well.

Small companies have to maintain low costs.

Often the founder has to wear many hats and cannot afford mistakes.

That’s why they are paranoid alcoholics.

No, no, no, I mean workaholics. That was a little slip of the tongue.

A business run by a paranoid alcoholic will not be in business very long.

For an entrepreneur, their business is their life, their dream, and their baby.

They don’t want to trust anyone with it.

That’s why they follow the proverb if you want a thing done well, do it yourself.

Can you blame them?

There is a massive difference between working for a company and owning a company.

When you own a company, you pour your life’s blood into it.

Often the only thing preventing a small business from going under is the founder’s will.

In the world of entrepreneurs, there is no such thing as a failed business, just entrepreneurs who gave up.

When your life’s work is on the line, do it yourself if you want a thing done well.

Delegation comes much later.
