English Idiom: Chew the cud

Cows chew the cud.

It’s the food they’ve already eaten and stored in their first stomach.

When they have the time, they bring this food back to their mouths and chew it until they have chewed it enough to move on through their body.

The cow in today’s little video is quietly chewing its cud.

However, if you look closely, the cow could be pondering something.

I have no idea why a cow would deeply consider anything, but that’s what he seems to be doing.

If I was a cow and I was going to ponder something, I’d probably chew my cud and ponder simultaneously; this is the era of multitasking.

When people think deeply about something, we can say they are chewing the cud.

If two people talk about something serious over a few beers, we could say they are chewing the cud together.

When you are asked a question but need some time to think it over, you can say you need some time to chew it over.

Chewing something over means pondering something before answering.
