Word of the Day: Heyday
My students know I’ve said for a while now Japan is entering the age of the woman.
Women are not in their heyday yet, but they will be soon, and it will last for a very long time.
The word heyday refers to the most successful period for someone or something.
To give an example, the Sony Walkman had its heyday in the late 1980s – early 1990s.
To get back on track here, you can shake your head and disagree with me if you like, but I still think I’m correct when I say the situation for women is going to improve much more than it is for men.
Women are in a better position to benefit from workplace and lifestyle changes than men are.
Things like more flexible working hours, higher wages and shorter workdays are being implemented just as the number of employed females is increasing.
Couples are delaying marriage until later in life, which, when combined with higher wages, gives women much more freedom to live their lives.
For some reason, the traditional burdens placed on men are not being lifted as quickly as they are for women.
As their wages stagnate or even fall, men are still expected to bring home the bacon.
We, men, are stuck in the past, whereas women are embracing the future.
Men have had their heyday.
Now, it’s time for the women to take over. I say more power to them.
