English Idiom: Have a monkey on your back

If you have a monkey on your back, you have a problem that you cannot shake off.

Perhaps you’re a baseball player and cannot get on base — every time you have an at-bat, you strike out.

Another example could be an ex-boyfriend who will not stop sending you emails pleading with you to take him back.

This guy is a monkey on your back, and you must get rid of him.

Then again, you may be a capybara at Asahiyama Zoo and have a monkey on your back.

That may be great if he is willing to give you a massage, but if he is just along for the ride, well, now your only option is to shake him off.
