Word of the Day: Hail
Have you ever tried to hail a taxi in New York?
No?
Then I’m sure you’ve seen people do it or seen it happen on TV.
It’s a familiar scene in New York to see a person stand on the curb (the edge of the sidewalk), raise their arm or whistle loudly and yell TAXI!
Whenever you call someone to attract their attention, especially a taxi, you hail them.
That is the traditional way to get a cab.
Of course, these days, Uber is a top-rated and world-famous ride-hailing app.
People who use Uber don’t have to go through the motions.
All they have to do is find a ride through the app, and –PRESTO- there it is!
There you have it; whenever you call someone to attract their attention, especially a taxi, you’re hailing them.
