WotD: Grassroots
If you know anything about politics, you know most of the money comes from big corporate donors, but the votes are won at the grassroots level.
Grassroots are interpersonal connections at the most basic level.
The ordinary people at the community level make up the main body of any organization.
It’s why prominent politicians, cabinet ministers and party bigwigs always visit the local ridings during elections.
Ordinarily, you’ll never see them in a small town or at your local political meeting until they need to grow the grassroots connections to win an election.
Then they show up in a whirlwind of activity, shaking babies and kissing hands.
Or is it the other way around?
Grassroots connections are not only for politicians but also for sports.
Some sports teams successfully build community relations at the grassroots level.
In Canada, professional ice hockey players often visit sick children in the hospital out of a genuine desire to help them forget their illness, even if it is only for an afternoon.
What it does, though, is it shows that they are a part of the community, not just rich athletes on TV.
It builds connections and goodwill between the team organization and the community.
People feel they know the players and see the athletes as one of them.
Many players become heroes who the locals can wave at and say hello to when they are out and about in the town.
Any community, organization or political party is made up of people.
People are the heart of everything.
We are the grassroots.
