Phrase: Got your back
Depending on who you talk to, there are at least four levels of friendship.
First, you have acquaintances, then casual friends and close friends.
Finally, you have your intimate friends.
They are the ones who got your back.
People who say they got your back are the ones you can depend on when times are tough.
They will help you and look out for you always.
As we grow older, it becomes harder to make intimate friends.
Acquaintances are the people you meet at the bus stop or train station.
You can talk with them while waiting, but that’s about it.
One day, you or they will change life patterns, and you’ll never see them again.
Most of us have casual friends.
A casual friend is a person with whom you share a common interest or activity.
You could be in the same hiking or reading club, but without those shared activities, you wouldn’t see them.
They are nice, dependable people but haven’t got your back.
Close friends are the ones you can complain about your wife and kids to over a beer in the back garden.
They are the guys you can stay up all night with, finishing off a bottle of Crown Royal while playing darts.
They’ve got your back when things go wrong, but when it comes to the very personal or serious stuff, they are not even along for the ride.
Then there are your in-for-the-long haul, intimate friends.
They are not the friends who stand behind you; they stand beside you, and when you fall, they are there to pick you up – every time.
For the times when God can’t be there, he gives you intimate friends who’ve always got your back.
