Word of the Day: Dumpster fire
The term dumpster fire has both literal and figurative meanings.
In North America, most restaurants have large garbage containers out back to put their garbage in.
Sometimes, a prankster or someone who likes to start fires will light one of these dumpsters on fire.
As you can imagine, these receptacles are full of greasy trash.
The smell of the smoke from the burning garbage is terrible, and it’s difficult for firefighters to put out.
In the figurative sense, a dumpster fire is a terrible situation that has been mismanaged and turned into a disaster.
Political scandals, company cover-ups and massive corruption can quickly become dumpster fires if mishandled.
Once the media discovers these things and makes them known to the public, it is challenging for politicians or company officials to control what happens next.
The situation turns into a dumpster fire, usually resulting in people losing their jobs.
