English Phrase: Come down the pike
Come down the pike is related to the word turnpike which I introduced yesterday. If you read that post, then you already know that a turnpike is a toll road.
It’s possible to use today’s phrase can in various ways. If you say that you can see something coming down the pike, it means that something has appeared or you have noticed it.
If you are watching a new drama on Amazon Prime or Netflix and you like it very much, you can say that it one of the best shows to come down the pike in a few years. You mean that it is the best show that you have seen or noticed for a long time.
Perhaps at your job, you are not sure what the next project will be. In that case, you can ask one of your coworkers what’s coming down the pike or what’s going to appear next.
Of course, we can’t predict the future, but we do have an idea of what the plan is for the future, and therefore we do have a rough idea of what’s coming down the pike.
